This month we caught up with Guy Dawson – Managing Director of Oryx Door Systems LLC and Founder of Build Dubai, a non-profit networking group based in Dubai, which brings interior design, architecture and construction professionals together from and across all aspects of the profession.
Why did you start Oryx?
No choice. Origin, whom I was working for, asked me to become their Middle East distributor, rather than their employee running their ME office.
What is the most surprising challenge that you’ve faced and how did you overcome it?
Finding experienced staff, from managers to installers. We began to train our own team and continue to do so today. That way we have loyal and trustworthy people throughout the company, who grow with us.
What is that one thing in your business that you are really proud of?
Our staff. Keen, loyal and trustworthy.
If you could give one piece of advice to your fellow entrepreneurs, what would it be?
Be patient and persevere.
What’s next for Oryx?
New showroom in Abu Dhabi, and continuous improvement in product quality and customer service.
What do you like to get up to outside of work?
Tennis, golf, yoga and being with family and friends.
What are you currently watching/reading/listening to?
Just read ‘Grow’ by Jim Stengel; I watch golf and tennis tips on YouTube, every day, and I’m always listening to David Gilmour.
Which entrepreneur do you most admire and why?
Steve Jobs for his relentless pursuit of innovation and quality.
Where’s your favourite place to eat?
A BBQ in our garden.
